Food for thought !

Most people are aware that a poor diet is not good for your general health but it has been shown that over 60% of people in this country do not realise that it can also affect your eyes.

We all know the old saying  “eat carrots to see in the dark ”  I don’t think they will help you to do that, but they would certainly be a  good addition to your diet as all vegetables are packed with vitamins and minerals. However blueberries and grapes contain anthocyanins and this may actually help to improve night vision.

The best vegetables of all to help protect your sight and keep your eyes healthy are the green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale. They both contain lutein and zeaxanthin which has been shown may help prevent some age related eye diseases such as macular degeneration  or cataracts.

Fish like cod, sardine and tuna are all good sources of Omega-3 and this can help with your general eye health or if you suffer from ” dry eyes “. Also research has shown that just eating one portion of fish a week can also help you to reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration.

So just remember next time you are in the Supermarket slow down and spend a bit more time browsing in the fruit and veg department and then  try and speed past all those lovely cakes and pastries. Your eyes and body  will thank you for it in the long run.
