School Vision Assessment: Is Your Child’s Vision Holding Them Back?

Eyewise Opticians in Uxbridge, Can Help Your Child.

Hi everyone! It’s the team here at Eyewise Opticians in Uxbridge, and we wanted to chat about something really close to our hearts: helping children and young adults thrive in their learning journey. One of the most rewarding parts of our work lately has been seeing the positive impact our Eyewise School Vision Assessment has on young people’s reading and learning skills.

As parents ourselves, or as people who care deeply about the younger generation, we understand that you want the very best for your children. That’s why we’ve developed a special assessment to really focus on their vision and identify any underlying issues that might be making things a bit tricky in the classroom.

Meet Harsh, our Optical Storyteller:

In the video below, Harsh discusses his recent work:

“One of the most rewarding aspects of my work lately has been helping children and young adults improve their reading and learning skills.

Our Eyewise School Vision Assessment helps me identify the sort of areas of concern that a parent might have about their child. This could be that they’re not reading very well, they’re missing words, they’re skipping lines, perhaps their eyes are hurting, or perhaps they’ve got a short attention span. You may also notice they are slow to read or easily distracted when reading.”

Things to look out for:

Have you noticed your child:

  • Struggling with reading? Maybe they’re missing words or skipping lines.
  • Complaining of sore eyes when they’re reading or doing schoolwork?
  • Having a short attention span, especially when it comes to reading?
  • Reading slowly or getting easily distracted by the text?

These are just some of the areas our Eyewise School Vision Assessment can help us explore. We take a comprehensive look at how your child’s eyes are working together, and it only takes about an hour.

During the assessment, we’ll check things like convergence – how well their eyes team up to focus on what they’re looking at. We’ll also look at their focusing abilities. And something we’re seeing fantastic results with is exploring colorimetry, which is all about how different colours can affect reading comfort.

You might have seen us using coloured filters in the video. These are a brilliant tool for helping those who experience visual discomfort when reading. By using coloured filter lenses, we can reduce the glare coming from screens and books. It’s been amazing to see how this simple change can enhance reading and learning performance and, most importantly, bring back the enjoyment to learning for these children, allowing them to read with confidence.

Honestly, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a child come back to us happy, making great progress at school. For us, that’s a truly satisfied customer!

Following the assessment, we’ll discuss our findings with you. Sometimes, spectacles might be prescribed, along with some helpful eye exercises and follow-up checks to make sure everything is on the right track.
