04 Feb Macular Degeneration
You may not know that Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of preventable blindness in the Western World. More people will go blind due to this condition than cataracts or glaucoma combined.
The Macula is the part of the eye that is responsible for our detailed vision and also colour vision, so you can see what an important part it plays.
The Macular contains a very important and naturally-occuring substance known as Macular Pigment and this helps to protect itself against the effects of Ultraviolet and blue light. This Pigment is made up of three compounds:- Lutein, Xeaxanthin and Meso-Xeaxanthin and also carotenoids most commonly found in certain fruit and veg. These are all thought to help protect the underlying cells from damage from blue light.
We are now offering a new service where we can measure the amount of Macular Pigment present then monitor this over time and give advice on diet and supplements to help fight against any onset of Macular Degeneration.
If you would like any more information about this service or have any questions about Macular Degeneration then please feel free to contact the Practice.
